A Laugh to Cry on Antena 2


On June 24 at 9h00 p.m., Miguel Azguime’s multimedia opera A Laugh to Cry, premiered in 2013, will be broadcast on Antena 2 (RTP - Portuguese National Radio) during the Grande Auditório programme. This live recording of A Laugh to Cry includes the performances of Frances M. Lynch (soprano), Marina Pacheco (soprano), Nicholas Isherwood (bass-baritone), Ágata Mandillo (speaker), Miguel Azguime (speaker) and the Norbotten NEO Ensemble conducted by Petter Sundkvist. The opera’s broadcast within the Grande Auditório will be preceded by an interview to Miguel Azguime, serving as an introduction to the performance.

New CD release: Miguel Azguime - music for strings


On July 3, at 9h30 p.m., during the next Open Farm Thursday - Electroacoustic Agriculture organized by Miso Music Portugal, Miguel Azguime will present his music, which composes the new CD by Miso Records, Miguel Azguime - music for strings. This new monographic edition, which will be released on this day, includes the performances by the Matosinhos String Quartet, a unique ensemble whose members are "accomplices" to Portuguese new music creation.

Miguel Azguime’s works comprising this new Miso Records CD are:  Le Feu Qui Dort (2008, rev. 2012) and Paraître Parmi (2006, rev. 2012) for string quartet, as well as Moment à l'extrêmement (2006) for violoncello and electronics (performed by Marco Pereira).

Miguel Azguime performs Frederic Rzewski’s Work


On September 14 at 5h00 p.m. at the Belém Arts Centre in Lisbon, Miguel Azguime will participate as narrator in the performance of Frederic Rzewski's work, Coming Together, during a concert of the Portuguese Chamber Orchestra conducted by Pedro Carneiro. The OCP and Miguel Azguime will perform the work of this American anarchist and minimalist, using the mere instructions, which the composer pointed out in the score - the music is accompanied by the increasingly tense reading of a text by Sam Melville, prisoner in Attica, where he was later assassinated during a riot.

Salt Itinerary in Guimarães and Lisbon


In October the multimedia opera Salt Itinerary by Miguel Azguime and Paula Azguime, will have two presentations in Portugal. The first performance, on October 25 at 6h30 p.m., will be held at the Centre for Art and Architecture Affairs (CAAA) in Guimarães, with Miguel Azguime as performer, Paula Azguime carrying out the sound diffusion and André Bartetzki responsible for the video programming. The second performance will take place within the inauguration of O'culto da Ajuda in Lisbon, on October 31 at 9h30 p.m. Created between 2003 and 2006 the Salt Itinerary is a one man show combining in a unique way, tradition and contemporaneity, as well as poetry, theatre, music and image.

Premiere of Son a ta demeure and release of new CD


Miguel Azguime's new piece for clarinet and piano, Son a ta demeure, written for Nuno Pinto and Elsa Silva, will be premiered on October 30, at the inauguration of O'culto da Ajuda in Lisbon. This concert, with live broadcast on Antena 2, will also include four other works by the composer, that is, Conver(say)tions, Soit Seul Sûr de Son, Moment à l'extrêmement... and No Oculto Profuso. They will be performed by the Sond'Ar-te Electric Ensemble Soloists. The concert is also an occasion for the release of a new CD by the Miso Records. This new edition entitled “Miguel Azguime - chamber music”, is composed of four of his chamber works created between 2001 and 2011: Derrière Son Double, Águas Marinhas, Conver(say)tions and De Part et d'Autre. It includes the performances of the Sond'Ar-te Electric Ensemble and the Camerata Aberta conducted by Pedro Amaral, Guillaume Bourgogne and Laurent Cuniot.

New monographic CD
Miguel Azguime - Chamber Music

The new edition by Miso Records, Miguel Azguime – Chamber Music, is the third monographic CD, which this year is dedicated to the music of Miguel Azguime. The first one is the edition of the Warsaw Autumn Festival, with the live recording of the premiere performance of his opera A Laugh to Cry. The second edition is by Miso Records, Miguel Azguime – Music for Strings, and it includes the participation of the Matosinhos String Quartet.
The new, third monographic edition was released on October 30, at the inauguration of Miso Music Portugal’s new venue, O’culto da Ajuda. It includes the performance of four emblematic chamber works by Miguel Azguime, composed between 2001 and 2011, relying on the complicity with the composer’s performers of choice, who have accompanied his work throughout the years. These recordings thus include the Sond’Ar-te Electric Ensemble, Camerata Aberta (from São Paulo), the Sond’Ar-te Electric Ensemble Soloists (Suzanna Lidegran, Elsa Silva and João Dias), as well as the conductors Pedro Amaral, Guillaume Bourgogne and Laurent Cuniot.

Premiere of De Fond en Comble


Miguel Azguime’s new work for voice and live electronics, with staging by Paula Azguime, De Fond en Comble, results from a commission by Nicholas Isherwwod (bass-baritone) for his project, the Electric Voice, which will be presented at the Música Viva 2014 Festival, on November 26 at O’culto da Ajuda in Lisbon. Later on, on December 14, this new work will be also performed by Nicholas Isherwood at the GMEM (Centre National de Création Musicale de Marseille).

Premiere of Enveloppement


The premiere performance of the version for voice and piano of the Enveloppement aria, which makes part of Miguel Azguime’s opera A Laugh to Cry, took place on May 30 at the final concert of the Música Viva 2015 Festival. It was be performed by Marina Pacheco (soprano) and Olga Amaro (piano) during their recital at O'culto da Ajuda in Lisbon, where Miguel Azguime was also reciter in Paulo Ferreira-Lopes’ work 7 Canções. This piece is based on the poetry by José Luís Peixoto from Gaveta dos Papéis.

Soit Seul Sûr de Son and As Coisas at the Música Viva 2015


Miguel Azguime's piece Soit Seul Sûr de Son for violin, with live electronics by Andre Bartetzki, is integrated in the project As Coisas by Maria da Rocha and Andre Bartetzki, presented on May 28 at Música Viva 2015 Festival. This theatre of sounds and work in progress is based on the homonymous story by José Saramago.

Salt Itinerary

With music and texts composed by Miguel Azguime and video composition by Paula Azguime, the “Salt Itinerary” is a one man show based on the metaphor of Salt as an essential element in sustainable life, and a unique ingredient making difference between insipidity and flavour. The Salt Itinerary is thus a paradigm for an alliance between creativity, technology and innovation in performing arts, joining in a singular manner, tradition and contemporaneity, theatre, music and image. It is a reflection on creation and madness, revolving around language as well as words as meaning and words as sound...

À Procura de Dizer...
as palavras dos poetas

On June 21, 22, 23, 28, 29 and 30 at O'culto da Ajuda in Lisbon Miguel Azguime will give a workshop, “À Procura de Dizer... as palavras dos poetas” (“In Search for Saying... the poets' words”); for all the ones who like words and enjoy saying them!This event integrated in the programme of the Lisbon Festivities is conceived around the concept of words as meaning and words as sounds, to create collectively a performance from a combination of poems by Portuguese authors, such as Mário de Sá Carneiro, Fernando Pessoa, Eugénio de Andrade, António Ramos Rosa, Carlos de Oliveira, Ernesto M. de Melo e Castro, Ângelo de Lima, Herberto Helder, and other texts proposed by the participants.
Free participation upon registration.

Premiere of Sweet Jasmim


On March 21 at the Music School of the National Conservatoire in Lisbon, Jasmim de Costa Mandillo premiered Miguel Azguime’s piece for cello solo, Sweet Jasmim.
Sweet Jasmin is a new didactic work, a 3-part suite, where each movement has a different difficulty level, encompassing the 3rd and 8th grades of the curricular programme at the National Conservatoire.

De Part et d’Autre on new CD by the Sond’Ar-te


The new CD by the Sond’Ar-te Electric Ensemble, portuguese chamber works of the XXI, which has recently been released by the Miso Records, includes Miguel Azguime’s work De Part et d’Autre (2011) for ensemble and live electronics, a commission of the French Ministry of Culture for the Court-Circuit Ensemble. On the new Sond’Ar-te and Miso Records double CD album Miguel Azguime’s work is performed by the Sond’Ar-te Electric Ensemble conducted by Laurent Cuniot. 

This new CD edition not only gathers works of composers from different generations, born between 1939 and 1981, but also juxtaposes diverse aesthetics, giving evidence to the multiple richness of Portuguese contemporary music creation.

Tra le terre by Miguel Azguime
premieres in Venice


Tra le terre is a new work by Miguel Azguime, which has been written for the Italian ensemble Ex Novo, as a commission of the La Fenice Theatre in Venice for the festival Lo spirito della musica di Venezia in the context of the 2015 Marathon dedicated to contemporary music by Italian, Israeli, Portuguese, Greek, Iranian, Albanian, Turkish, Lebanese and Maltese composers. The piece’s title Tra le terre refers to the Mediterranean Sea, not only as a geographical place in itself but also as a place of encounter of different cultures. The premiere will take place on the July 9 2015 at Teatro La Fenice in Venice.

Miguel Azguime at the Electroacoustic Winds 2015


This month Miguel Azguime is one of the key speakers at the Electroacoustic Winds 2015 . 1st International Electroacoustic Music Congress, taking place between September 16 and 20 at the Culture and Congress Centre in Aveiro. In this sense, on September 19, the composer will give a presentation under the following theme: The Loudspeaker Orchestra Paradigm: a place for interpretation of electroacoustic music. The Electroacoustic Winds 2015 is organized by the CIME, Research Centre for Electro-Acoustic Music at the Aveiro University, and the Arte no Tempo association.

Miguel Azguime at the 1st International Symposium
“éducation, création et numérique” (“education, creation and the digital”)


This month Miguel Azguime is one of the guest speakers at the 1st International Symposium, “education, creation and the digital” (“éducation, création et numérique”),  taking place between October 7 and 9 in Montbéliard and Belfort in France. This event is organized by the Montbéliard Conservatory in cooperation with other entities, as an extension of the “Ariane#” project. Its programme encompasses meetings, presentations, communications, round tables, as well as concerts and performances - all of them related to the symposium's theme of the digital as the lever for cultural and artistic education. Miguel Azguime's presentation is scheduled for the last day of the symposium, on October 9 in Montbéliard.

International Conference
“Archiving and Preservation of Electroacoustic Music”


Between October 2 and 4 at O'culto da Ajuda in Lisbon, Miso Music Portugal (Portuguese Federation of ICEM) and the International Confederation for Electroacoustic Music organize the international conference, “Archiving and Preservation of Electroacoustic Music”. Various experts in electroacoustic music from the world over (Belgium, Chile, China, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Poland, Spain, Switzerland and the USA) will participate in this event, whose programme consists of numerous presentations on the above-mentioned theme (including a presentation by Miguel Azguime), presentations of projects concerning technological innovation in music, as well as concerts with the Loudspeaker Orchestra . Miso Music Portugal, where Miguel Azguime will be also responsible for sound projection.

On November 19, on the occasion of the International Meeting #AST 2015 (Art-Science-Technology), organized by the ACROE, Association pour la Création et la Recherche sur les Outils d’Expression, in the framework of the EASTN, European Art-Science-Technology Network, the Sond'Ar-te Electric Ensemble conducted by Pedro Neves, will premiere Miguel Azguime's new work "En Gêne Engin ni Gemme". ”De Fond en Comble” in the USA


“De Fond en Comble” (2014) for voice and electronics by Miguel Azguime is one of the pieces making part of the recital, “The Electric Voice”, by the bass-baritone Nicholas Isherwood. Miguel Azguime as narrator at the Sond’Ar-te performance


On December 15 and 16 at the O'culto da Ajuda in Lisbon, and on December 17 at the Teatro da Rainha in Caldas da Rainha (Portugal), the Sond'Ar-te Electric Ensemble with Miguel Azguime and Ágata Mandillo as narrators, and conducted by Pedro Neves, will perform a special repertoire within the Sond’Ar-te project, “Diz-Concerto”, which will include premieres of works by Daniel Martinho, Ângela da Ponte and Sofia Sousa Rocha, as well as a work by Pedro Rebelo.
